Unidas Podemos

(United We Can)

A Spanish electoral coalition of left-wing political parties, formed in 2016 and effectively dissolved in 2023. From January 2020 to November 2023, it participated in the Government of Spain through a vice-premiership and five ministries. From its inception, the political alliance was led by Pablo Iglesias, also the leader of Podemos, until his resignation on 4 May 2021. At that time, the leadership was assumed by Yolanda Díaz, a member of the Communist Party of Spain and a former member of United Left (IU).

Initially, it was created under the name Unidos Podemos on 13 May 2016, with the aim of running in the general elections that same year. It brought together Podemos, IU, Popular Unity, Equo, Building the Left–Socialist Alternative, and other parties. It ran in all constituencies for the Congress of Deputies and the Senate, except in Catalonia (where the En Comú Podem coalition ran), Valencia (where A la Valenciana ran), and Galicia (where En Marea ran) for both houses, and in Ibiza and Formentera to the Senate (where Podemos-EU-Más ran).

In the regional elections in Galicia, the Basque Country, Catalonia, and Andalusia held between 2016 and 2018, similar coalitions were formed in the different territories, with other regionalist or localist forces joining in some of them. From 2019 onwards, in the lead-up to the European, regional, municipal, and general elections, the political space consolidated under the new brand, Unidas Podemos, although in some autonomous communities the electoral coalition did not materialize or maintained separate names (such as Catalonia, where these parties ran in the En Comú Podem coalition, or Galicia, where they ran as Galicia en Común). The change in grammatical gender with respect to the Unidos Podemos coalition was attributed to "a recognition of the struggle of the feminist movement." Equo left the alliance in September of that same year. Podemos and IU ran again under the name Unidas Podemos in the following general elections. In June 2021, the new Green Alliance party filled the void left by Equo after splitting from it.

Based on the results obtained in the November 2019 general election, Unidas Podemos was part of the Government of Spain from 2020 to 2023, led by Pedro Sánchez (PSOE). It was the first coalition government in Spain since 1939.

In the 2023 regional elections, the electoral coalition obtained poor results. This forced the political parties to regroup into a new electoral coalition for the July 2023 general election: Sumar, led by Yolanda Díaz. The emergence of Sumar meant the electoral extinction of the "Unidas Podemos" brand, although its political relevance had already diminished.

Leader: Pablo Iglesias Turrión (13 May 2016 – 4 May 2021), Yolanda Díaz (4 May 2021 – 9 June 2023)
