First Chamber Moderate Party
Första kammarens moderata parti
A parliamentary group formed in 1905. The chairman was Gustaf Tamm from 1905 to 1908, Ivar Afzelius from 1909 to 1910 and Axel Asker from 1911. The party merged with the United Right Party in 1912 to form the National Party of the First Chamber. It is one of the historical predecessors of the Moderate Coalition Party.
The group was formed at the end of the 1905 Riksdag by those members of the Chamber who took a more moderate position on political issues than its majority. Without marking any distinct position on the tariff issue, the party nevertheless came to include the majority of the Chamber's free traders, but also some protectionists. The first council of trustees included Gustaf Tamm (chairman), Olof Melin and Olof Björklund from the free traders side, and Filip Boström and Edvard Montgomery from the protectionists.
Among the party's trusted men or more prominent members in the following years are Olof Jonsson i Hof, Carl Swartz, Gustaf Lagerbring and August Wijkander. After the proportional electoral system was applied in 1910 in committee elections, the party's influence was strengthened. In 1910, 46 to 50 members of the 150 members of the chamber gathered around its lists, and it could now also fill a third of the committee seats from its own circle. After the Staaff government in the autumn of 1911 succeeded in obtaining the king's permission to dissolve the first chamber and the left-wing groups returned after it with a strength of 63 men (51 liberals and 12 socialists), a definite desire emerged within the country for a merger of the right-wing groups in the chamber, which led to the dissolution of the Moderate Party and the formation of the First Chamber's National Party at the beginning of the 1912 Riksdag.
Chairperson: Gustaf Tamm (1905–1908), Ivar Afzelius (1909–1910), Axel Asker (1911 – January 1912)
