Socialist Alliance of Working People of Yugoslavia
Социјалистички савез радног народа Југославије Socijalistički savez radnog naroda Jugoslavije
A mass socio-political organization that operated in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1945 to 1991.
It was established on 5 August 1945, under the name People's Front of Yugoslavia (NOF), through the transformation of the Unified People's Liberation Front (JNOF), an organization that, during the People's Liberation War, had rallied the groups and individuals supporting the People's Liberation Movement (NOP). At its Fourth Congress in February 1953, it changed its name to the Socialist Alliance of Working People.
Like other socio-political organizations in the SFR Yugoslavia, it was under the control and domination of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia. It was composed of six republic-level and two provincial organizations; it was led initially by the Federal Committee and later by the Federal Conference of the SSRN. From June 9, 1954, the newspaper Borba served as the official organ of the SSRNJ.
It ceased operations in January 1990 following the dissolution of the League of Communists and the introduction of a multi-party system. Some of its republic-level organizations transformed into socialist-oriented political parties, the most prominent being the Socialist Party of Serbia (formed through the merger of the League of Communists of Serbia and the Socialist Alliance of the Working People of Serbia). It was officially dissolved on January 16, 1991, following the formation of the Union of Socialist Parties of Yugoslavia (SSPJ) by the successor parties to the Socialist Alliance organizations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, and Montenegro.
President: Josip Broz Tito (5 August 1945 – 28 June 1963), Lazar Koliševski (28 June 1963 – 30 June 1967), Ratko Dugonjić (30 June 1967 – 14 July 1969), Veljko Milatović (14 July 1969 – 15 June 1974), Dušan Petrović Šane (15 June 1974 – 21 July 1977), Todo Kurtović (26 May 1978 – 27 May 1981), Kolj Široka (27 May 1981 – 24 May 1982), Marin Cetinić (24 May 1982 – 23 May 1983), Jovan Dejanović (23 May 1983 – 24 May 1984), Marjan Rožič (24 May 1984 – 24 May 1985), Aleksandar Grličkov (24 May 1985 – 23 May 1986), Nenad Bućin (23 May 1986 – 20 May 1987), Milojko Drulović (20 May 1987 – 23 May 1988), Božidar Čolaković (23 May 1988 – 23 May 1989), Jelena Milojević (23 May 1989 – 24 April 1990), Josip Horvatin (24 April 1990 – 28 June 1990), Vojislav Mićović (acting, 3 July 1990 – 16 January 1991)
