Established in April 2005 by Gennady Semigin, who was expelled from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation after he failed in a power struggle with Gennady Zyuganov. Legally, Patriots of Russia is a successor party of the Russian Party of Labour.
In 2006 Gennadiy Semigin and his new Patriots of Russia party joined the Rodina faction in the Duma. Following Rodina's merger with the Russian Party of Life and the Russian Party of Pensioners under the leadership of Sergey Mironov in October 2006 to form the A Just Russia party, Patriots of Russia declared its intention to run as a separate party in the 2007 State Duma election. In the 2007 election, members of the unregistered Great Russia party participated on the Patriots of Russia list.
In 2008, the VIII Congress approved the self-dissolution of the Party of Peace and Unity (PME) and its entry into the Patriots of Russia party. However, in 2012, following legislative amendments to simplify the registration of political parties, the PME organizing committee decided to reinstate itself and leave the Patriots of Russia party.
The Party of Russia's Rebirth (PVR) merged into the Patriots of Russia on 9 September 2008. PVR was re-established on 26 October 2012.
In December 2017, the Patriots of Russia announced that they would not run in the 2018 Russian presidential election and that the party would support current president Vladimir Putin for the elections.
Since 2011, the party has been an ally of the All-Russia People's Front (ONF), created at the initiative of Vladimir Putin.
Until 2021, PR maintained close ties with the A Just Russia party, which it subsequently joined. In February 2021, PR (together with For Truth) merged into the A Just Russia – Patriots – For Truth party.
As a political movement, it continues to exist to this day.
The party was officially democratic socialist and collectivist. The party had many of the same policy positions as the Communist Party of the Russian Federation.
