Overview
A clandestine Portuguese political organization during the Estado Novo dictatorship.
It was founded in 1944 by the merger of the Nucleus of Socialist Doctrine and Action with the Democratic Union and initially called itself the "Democratic-Socialist Union".
On 6 November 1949, the members signed a pact to form the "Socialist Union Party".
During the 1950s, several international contacts were attempted for recognition of the organization, until in 1964 the Portuguese Socialist Action was formed. Among the most active members were Manuel Sertório, Jacinto Simões, José Pessegueiro, António Lobo Vilela and Fernando Mayer Garção.
