Revolutionary Party of the Proletariat
Partido Revolucionário do Proletariado
A Portuguese revolutionary socialist political organization, born underground in September 1973, still under the fascist regime.
It brought together former members of the CDE, progressive Catholics, other anti-fascists and anti-capitalists with members of the Revolutionary Brigades. In the face of the then recurrent electoral fraud in Portugal and Pinochet's anti-democratic coup in Chile, the PRP defended the socialist revolution and the dictatorship of the proletariat (extracted from its constitutive manifesto of 1973).
Its newspapers Revolucion and Página Um conveyed anti-colonialist and anti-imperialist messages. Politically PRP was very active in 1975, during the "Ongoing Revolutionary Process". It promoted actions that directly involved citizens, getting involved in residents' committees, population awareness actions, urban occupations and initiatives to provide new housing (SAAL). They defended a "base democracy" in the party and society.
During this period, the PRP became confused with the Revolutionary Brigades, functioning in an articulated and organized way, receiving financial support and giving it political cover. It never ran in any legislative or municipal elections, however he supported Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho in the two presidential elections. After 25 November 1975, PRP and Revolutionary Brigades were formally separated.
It ended its effective activity in 1978, with the arrest of most of its leaders, including Isabel do Carmo and Carlos Antunes, and there were civil society solidarity campaigns. Some of the militants would transfer to the Workers' Unitary Organization, with the party declared extinct only on 5 June 1980.
Leaders: Carlos Antunes Isabel do Carmo
