Workers' Unitary Organization

Organização Unitária de Trabalhadores

A left-wing, anti-fascist, anti-colonialist political organization that aimed for socialist revolution based on popular power and (theoretical) "armed revolutionary violence". It was founded in April 1978 in Marinha Grande, Portugal, in the presence of 1400 activists.

It is worth remembering that at the beginning of Portuguese democratization, all parliamentary parties had in their statutes the move towards Socialism, with the exception of the CDS. Despite the different understandings of Socialism and the way to get there, this was written in the preamble of the Portuguese Constitution.

The (relative) majority of its bodies were occupied by PRP militants, particularly after the extinction of the PRP in 1981. OUT integrated into the Popular Unity Force (FUP) with other parties with the aim of an expanded electoral front for the presidential and parliamentary elections in 1980.
