General Suffrage Association of Sweden

Sveriges allmänna rösträttsförbund

A part of the suffrage movement in Sweden, founded in 1890. The leaders of the movement were liberals, but the association was open to all. The previous year, the Swedish Social Democratic Workers' Party had been formed, and when it came to the view on suffrage, the interests of both movements coincided. The symbol used was the cornflower, the national flower of Östergötland, since the two Östergötians Isidor Kjellberg and Alfred Edling were two very strong driving forces in the movement.

The first chairman of the suffrage movement was Julius Mankell, an officer and member of parliament (liberal). On the initiative of the social democrat Hjalmar Branting, the Suffrage Association organized a people's parliament alongside the unjust parliament that had shown itself to be uninterested in universal suffrage. When Mankell died in 1897, the chairmanship was taken over by David Bergström, also a liberal member of parliament. The Swedish General Suffrage Association was dissolved in 1900 and partly succeeded by the Free-minded National Association.

Chairperson: Julius Mankell (1890 – 1897), David Bergström (1897 – 1900)
