Communist Party of the RSFSR

Коммунистическая партия РСФСР Kommunisticheskaya partiya RSRSR

International alliances

Republican branch of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. Established on 19 June 1990 (before that, the RSFSR remained the only republic of the Soviet Union that did not have a republican communist party). The CP RSFSR was not an independent party and did not have its own charter or program.

Politically, CP RSFSR became a centre for communist opponents of Gorbachev's CPSU leadership.

The August putsch (19-21 August 1991) served as the basis for accusing the CPSU of unconstitutional activity. By decree of RSFSR President Boris Yeltsin on 6 November 1991, the activities of the CPSU and its republican organization, the CP RSFSR, were terminated, and their property was confiscated. However, the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation issued a ruling on 30 November 1992, declaring the ban on the activities of the primary organizations of the CPSU/CP RSFSR unconstitutional.

Despite the ban, the party's activities continued until February 1993, when a restoration congress was held. Based on the primary organizations, the CPSU RSFSR was re-established as the Communist Party of the Russian Federation.

First Secretaries of the Central Committee of the KP RSFSR: Ivan Polozkov (22 June 1990 – 6 August 1991), Valentin Kuptsov (6 August 1991 – 7 November 1991 (de jure) / 14 February 1993 (de facto))
