A political party in Serbia. It was founded on July 12, 1997. Its founders were Dr. Vuk Obradović, Prof. Dr. Pavić Obradović, and Dr. Dušan Janjić; according to some sources, it received financial support from businessman Bogoljub Karić.
The party experienced a turbulent and dynamic history, winning over 100,000 votes in the 1997 parliamentary elections.[citation needed] It was a founding member of the Alliance for Change and the Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS).
It participated in numerous activities aimed at achieving democratic change. It was among the key organizers of the events of October 5th.
Following the 2000 parliamentary elections, in which it participated as part of the DOS coalition, the SD held nine seats in the republic parliament and three in the federal parliament. The party's president, Vuk Obradović, served as a Deputy Prime Minister in the Republic Government led by Dr. Zoran Đinđić; however, he was soon dismissed from the post following a sex scandal, and the SD was stripped of all its parliamentary seats by DOS. The sex scandal marked a turning point in the development of the SD.
Following the Vuk Obradović scandal, Slobodan Orlić took over the party and subsequently initiated a merger with Žarko Korać's Social Democratic Union (SDU), leading to the formation of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). A group of members loyal to Vuk Obradović, who disagreed with this move, kept a faction of the party independent of the merger, allowing the SD to continue its existence.
The SD participated in the 2003 and 2007 parliamentary elections but garnered an extremely low number of votes. It remained an extra-parliamentary party until it was struck from the register.
From December 2006, the SD was led by lawyer Nenad Vukasović, known to the public as the defense attorney for Zvezdan Jovanović, who was accused of the assassination of Dr. Zoran Đinđić. Vukasović's leadership brought about a significant shift in the party's operations and stances; however, the party was dissolved in 2010 after failing to collect enough signatures to re-register under the new Law on Political Parties.
