Humanist Party
Partido Humanista
A political party in Spain founded in 1984. It is currently a member of Humanist International and the Humanist Movement.
Founded in Spain in 1984, it was registered in the Register of Political Parties on May 16, 1984. Initially, it was linked to the Argentine group La Comunidad, along with the Green Ecologist Party.
One of its main leaders was Rafael de la Rubia. In April 1986, the Humanist Party participated, along with the Communist Party of Spain (PCE), the Communist Party of the Peoples of Spain (PCPE), the Socialist Action Party (PASOC), Republican Left (IR), the Progressive Federation (FP), and the Carlist Party, in the founding of United Left. Due to differences with the other coalition partners, the Humanist Party left the coalition a few months later, at the request of the other parties. The party was accused of being a sect that only succeeded in "taking votes away" from United Left in the June 1986 general elections. For its part, the Humanist Party accused the PCE of "communistizing" United Left after its departure from the coalition.
It is part of an international movement with a diffuse ideology—it has been literally described as a "dark" party— which leads it, for example, to ally itself with left-wing parties in Spain and with the far right in other countries.
Weighed down by a weak "electoral appeal," in Spain it garnered support of around 3,000 followers around 2001 or 2,500 in 2003. In 2014, it obtained 15,278 votes in the European Parliament elections. They are apparently proponents of "self-liberation through Siloist catharsis."
Secretary-General: Rafael de la Rubia (1984 – first half of 1990s), Periodo de transición y liderazgos rotativos (1990s – 2009), José Luis Álvarez Cedena (2010 – 2011), Arturo Viloria Fuentes (2012 – 2014), José Luis Álvarez Cedena (2014 – present)
